Common questions
How is overtime figured?
Each job has its own rules: weekly overtime (40 hours by default), plus optional daily overtime, with your own multiplier. Shiftcard Pro adds daily double time, a seventh-day rule, and shift differentials. When you have differentials, extra pay is based on your average hourly rate for the week (the "regular rate" method many employers use). Check your employer's policy and adjust the rules to match.
I work two jobs for the same employer. Do the hours add up?
Yes, with Shiftcard Pro. Give both jobs the same employer: when you edit the second job, tap the employer you already entered under the Employer field. Small differences in how the name is written (capitals, accents, punctuation, "Inc.") don't matter, and if a name looks like a typo of one you've used, Shiftcard asks "Did you mean…?". It asks before jobs start or stop counting together, because past weeks are recalculated. Jobs counted together share their overtime rules, workweek, rounding and automatic lunch, and the Jobs list, time card, pay and exports say so.
My employer rounds punches. Can Shiftcard match?
With Shiftcard Pro, edit the job and choose Round punches: nearest 5, 6, 10 or 15 minutes. Your real punch times are kept; only the hours used for pay are rounded. If your employer takes out a lunch automatically, turn on Automatic unpaid lunch in the same place (also Pro): it's deducted only from shifts where you didn't log an unpaid break.
Does my pay stub match my hours?
On the Pay tab, pick the pay period and tap Check a Pay Stub. Enter the regular hours, overtime hours, and gross pay from your stub (any you have), plus any pay Shiftcard doesn't track, like holiday or PTO pay. Shiftcard stamps it Matches, or Short with the hours and amount missing, or Differs when the hours add up but are split differently between regular and overtime, and lists common reasons. Leave out anything your stub doesn't show. It compares gross pay, before taxes. Checking the current and last pay period is free; Shiftcard Pro keeps the checks for older ones. Set your payday in the job to get a reminder to check.
Can I plan my week?
Yes. On the Punch tab, tap an upcoming day to pencil in a shift. It shows in gray and isn't counted until you work it; punching in that day replaces it. The card then shows the week if you work your schedule, including when overtime would start. You get a reminder when each scheduled shift starts, and the Card tab can copy this week's shifts to next week.
Does Shiftcard handle holiday pay?
With Shiftcard Pro, add a shift differential to the job and choose Dates (holidays), then pick the days your employer pays extra, as a multiplier (like 1.5×) or an extra amount per hour.
I forgot to punch out.
Shiftcard reminds you after 10 hours on the clock. Change it in Jobs › Reminders, anywhere from 30 minutes to 16 hours. From the reminder you can punch out or snooze it for 15 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour. Punched in late? Right after Punch In, tap Started earlier? to fix the time. To fix it later, tap the shift on your card and edit it. You can also add a whole shift by hand. Shiftcard can also remind you 5 minutes before an unpaid break ends (set the usual break length in the job). Reminders need notifications on for Shiftcard in Settings; Jobs › Reminders tells you if they're off.
Can I punch from the Lock Screen?
Yes. After you punch in, a timer appears on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island with Break and Punch Out buttons. They ask you to unlock first, so pocket taps don't count while the phone is locked. iOS keeps a Lock Screen timer for up to 8 hours, and only the app can start a new one. On longer shifts Shiftcard sends a quiet notification after about 7 hours; open the app from it and the timer keeps going. Widgets keep counting either way. The notification needs notifications on for Shiftcard; Shiftcard asks the first time you open it with a job set up.
I got a raise. Will my past pay change?
No. Each shift keeps the rate it was worked at. When you change a job's rate, Shiftcard asks whether it's for new shifts only (a raise) or for all shifts (fixing a rate that was wrong from the start). You can also change one shift's rate in its editor. Changes to overtime rules, differentials, and rounding apply to past weeks too.
How are overnight shifts counted?
A shift counts toward daily overtime on the day it started, all of it, even the hours after midnight. For weekly overtime, a shift that crosses into a new workweek is split at midnight: the hours before count toward the old week, the rest toward the new one. That's how the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act counts a workweek. For the seventh-day rule, a day counts as worked if a shift started on it, so the early-morning end of Saturday night's shift doesn't make Sunday a worked day.
How do I send my hours to my boss or payroll?
With Shiftcard Pro, on the Card tab, tap Export, choose the weeks (this or last pay period, this or last week, or all), and pick Time Cards (PDF), with one printable page per week (a week with many shifts continues on a second page), your notes, and signature lines for you and your supervisor, or Spreadsheet (CSV).
Is Shiftcard free?
Yes. Shiftcard is free for one job, with no time limit and no ads: punching, breaks, weekly and daily overtime, the Lock Screen timer, widgets, reminders, and pay estimates. Shiftcard Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It adds multiple jobs, PDF and CSV time cards, double time and the 7th-day rule, shift differentials and holiday pay, punch rounding and an automatic lunch, and pay stub checks for older pay periods. On a new iPhone, tap Jobs › Shiftcard Pro › Restore Purchases. Refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Does Shiftcard calculate taxes?
No. It shows estimated gross pay from your logged hours, before taxes and deductions. Your pay stub is the official record.
How do I use Shiftcard in Spanish or French?
Jobs › Settings › Language, or Settings › Apps › Shiftcard › Language on your iPhone.
Will my hours move to a new iPhone?
Yes, if you're signed in to iCloud on both phones and iCloud is on for Shiftcard. Nothing goes through our servers; there aren't any. See the privacy policy.
